I have varied experience working with children from all types of backgrounds, from working
in an orphanage to volunteering in my daughter’s schools to my work at the Department on
the Status of Women, which focuses on girls and young women in San Francisco.  My work
with children over the years has fueled my advocacy and activism for equitable educational
opportunities for all children.

My daughter, Francesca, attends
public school in the SFUSD. Throughout
her educational career, I have volunteered considerably.  Much of my volunteer work came
when my daughter was at Thurgood Marshall Academic High School, where I was the PTSA
President.  I have worked for the SFUSD as a Parent Liaison when the District created the
position so a parent advocated could assist other parents integrate seamlessly into the
school community.  I have gathered and organized parents, teachers and students to fight
for our community’s right to have a say over graduation requirements.  apply the 280-230
graduation credit rule for Thurgood Marshall and Philip & Sala Burton High Schools. I was
instrumental in organized parents, teachers, students and community members from all
over San Francisco to address the Police Riot at Thurgood Marshall with the Board of
Education, central office personnel, the Police Commission, and members of the Board of
Supervisors in support of families affected by that tragic day in October 2002.  I
campaigned with my daughter and spoke to voters throughout the city to help pass
Proposition H, the 2003 the Police Reform Initiative.  And I also initiated the organization of
teachers, parents and students to come together two years after the Thurgood Marshall
10.11.02 incident to speak before the newly appointed Police Commission, which ultimately,
was the catalyst for a new memorandum of understanding between the San Francisco
Police Department and the San Francisco Unified School District.

Currently, I work for the San Francisco Department on the Status of Women, as a CEDAW
Policy Analyst (CEDAW is the United Nations’ Treaty on the Convention to End All Forms of
Discrimination Against Women. My daily focus is centered on policies and organizations in
San Francisco and the School District that support girls and young women, as well as
advocating for women’s health issues.  I graduated from the University of San Francisco
with a B.A. in Human Communication and am currently finishing an M.B.A. degree in Finance
at the University of Phoenix’s China Basin Campus.
What a difference a difference makes!
I’ve been working with severely
disadvantaged children since 1986, when
I worked at an orphanage for mentally,
physically, emotionally and sexually
abused children.  During part of my
tenure there I was a tutor for the Los
Angeles Unified School District on special
assignment.  I took advantage of the
family-style relationships that I already
had with the children to help them
strengthen their own sense of self.
My daughter, Francesca is named after my mother,
Frances – a San Francisco native. My name is flavored
from the places my mother hoped to travel to: Kim (Asia)
and Shree (South-East Asia).
I have worked with the PTSA at Lincoln High
School and helped the District PTA with
recruitment.  I am a founding member of the
Board of Education’s Parent Advisory Council
because of my advocacy for all parents.  I
chaired the PAC Safety Committee and served on
the Recruitment Committee as well as serving as
the PAC liaison to the Police Commission  I firmly
believe that strong “student-parent-school site”
communication and relationships facilitate the
most fruitful of all academic communities.

I also volunteer as a USA Track and Field certified
coach, encouraging athletes to use their studies
and talents to propel them through school and
into college.  Additionally, I coach for the
Northern California Chapter of the International
Special Olympics in Track and Field, supporting all
of the athletes regardless of their abilities.
